What's Worth Remembering?

I never really knew the meaning of Memorial Day. Growing up, it was another excuse to have time off from school, another excuse to get away from what little work I chose to do. It never dawned on me to investigate and understand what the day meant.

My logic told me it was a holiday. I’ve always understood that the word holiday is short for ‘holy day’. The word ‘holy’ is commonly associated with what is sacred, something to be venerated, something that carries the essence of the divine. With this logic, I asked myself: what makes this day ‘holy’?

Memorial Day is celebrated as a “United States federal holiday”. That in itself is an insult to my logic. A government’s domain is the political authority, but a government assigning sacred days is a blatant attack on an individual’s spiritual values. How can a government choose for an individual which day is holy, which day is sacred? I see nothing divine about a federal government, especially one with origins that stem from calculated bloodshed and disregard for human life and traditional values. These ‘federal holidays’ skew our understanding of that which is divine. By corrupting a person’s understanding of what is holy, no realm of the individual’s psyche becomes inaccessible. For what is holy is meant to be sacred and unsoiled, but if a government is able to alter one’s definition of what is holy, then that government has the power to manipulate a person any way it chooses because the notions of what is sacred, of what is holy, of what is divine dictate the values of an individual. If you change one’s understanding of what is divine, you can change their values. I see nothing honest in a system which wants to create values for an individual with a purpose to manipulate them.

My logic also told me that Memorial Day stood for a day in which something or someone is commemorated, remembered. So then I asked myself: who or what am I supposed to remember and why?

Memorial Day stands as a day to remember Americans who died in war, to remember those who sacrificed their lives for us living today. Yes, those soldiers were brothers, fathers, husbands, uncles, etc. but they did not die for you. They died to further the agenda of America. They were used by a government. Americans are quick to pay respect to fallen soldiers who fought to guarantee their freedoms, yet in this so called land of freedom and equality and equal opportunity there is a vast majority of people who are oppressed by the very government they take so much pride in associating themselves with. They are “proud to be American”. They fail to realize that just because you are in the country, that reason alone does not make you American. There are still those who, because of the structure of the system, are unemployed, are hungry, are homeless, have been systematically oppressed and are so desperate that the most viable options just to get by are drugs and crime, because the government only created a false reality of freedom and liberty. There are still people who do not enjoy the benefits of America. No, you’ve got to enjoy the fruits of Americanism to be an American. People celebrate the idea of liberty but fail to see the invisible chains of a shackled freedom. Memorial Day becomes another opportunity to distract people further from the more important aspects of life.

We must remember that American history is short compared to the history of the world. Many people have died for America, yes, but what about the people who sacrificed for us before America was established? Through a system of manipulation and distraction, America has successfully discouraged one from honoring more important individuals directly involved with their existence. We should be remembering the most significant people of our past: our ancestors. They are the direct reason for our existence. It is through their will to survive that we are here today. Their blood runs through our veins. Are they not worth at least a day of remembrance? We must respect, honor, and nurture our true roots rather than tend to a tree which bears no fruit for us.

So, what is Memorial Day? Who do we remember? Why is it important that we remember them? These are questions that any thinking person living in America should ask themselves every day, not just the designated day created by the government for their own agenda.

I gotta clear up space on my HDD. There's just too much music, some of which i rarely listen to unless there's that off chance that the melody or a lyric pops into my head. So this is my lazy attempt to share what i've come across throughout the whole year.

Imma do each section by month, starting with January. I'd up each individually, but that would take more time than i'd like to. So here's the 1st one! Enjoy!

Highlights:

I'll be real, i wasn't up on U-N-I till my sister introduced me to em & i only got the 2nd track cuz Kweli was on it... but both are bangers! Esp. Beautiful Day... that shit's the new '93 Til... at least it gives me that same vibe! People say the remix is better, but i fucks with the OG.

So the master slacker i am, i decided to start on some journal entries for my world lit class today. We're supposed to have at least 13 by next week (ain't no thang) but i did one on a piece that wasn't even mandatory. Oh well. Enjoysies:

I read Shelley’s “A Defence…” last semester & though the “wow” factor of his vernacular and threading of language that boasts of the use of poetry & poet’s abilities are lessened this time around, I still cling to some of the sentiments he highlights in its conclusion.

I feel poetry, and certainly literature, has that power to move because it is something one can feel without an actual touch. It is a compass for the wilderness within which guides & comforts us as we go about the journey. In the story of humanity, when there is a struggle to express in an open & clear fashion, we turn to poetry. “The most unfailing herald, companion, and follower of the awakening of a great people to work a beneficial change in opinion or institution, is Poetry” (824). It appeases the anxiety of our emotions which are otherwise left unexpressed.

I also admire the way Shelley compares the painter to the poet who “colour all that they combine with the evanescent hues of this ethereal world; a word, or a trait in the representation of a scene or a passion… and reanimate, in those who have ever experienced these emotions… the buried image of the past” (824). And it’s not something that the poet can help. Shelley writes that they are “compelled to serve, the Power which is seated upon the throne of their soul” (825). The source of this creative ability is embedded within and has less having to do with themselves because it is less their spirit than the spirit of the age (825). Though I feel that it is the spirit of the past mixed with the spirit of the age, I pretty much agree with Shelley.

I'm just gonna rant. When you're 1-3, that's all you can really do.
I have to be honest, i didn't watch the last game, listened to the one before that, and caught only the last 5 min. of week 2. There actually has been things to do other than drinking, boiling my temper and screaming obscenities at a mockery of a team.

What looked to be a promising season slowly regressed into the continued trend of piling loses. When will it fucking end?

The offense has crumbled. I'm not even going to look for stats. I know we haven't scored a touchdown in 2 weeks. San Diego v. Pittsburgh scored 4 in 1 quarter. We epitomize futility.

WR is stacked... with non production. Dunno why Walker isn't playing. DHB looks to be an influence in '10-'11. Thank goodness for Murphy. Hope Chaz comes back and gets rolling right away... we need something.

OL is still a concern. Gallery's out, now shitty ass Green too? I hope for divine intervention that whoever plays behind him is better.

No running game. It was like 1 yard in the 1st half last game against Houston till Fargas got a cosmetic 13 yarder to end the half. Wow. Then i see McFadden's out for a few weeks. That top pick sure is paying dividends. At least we get to see Bush play more, who i see as a more well rounded back of the 3.

QB play epitomizes pathetic. Sorry, disgusting play by #2. I don't want him pulled (yet) but there hasn't been evidence in his play that shows any progress. That's disturbing since last season he ended up on a good note. I'll let him ride out the season before i start getting him, but it's getting really, really difficult.

The defense looked to be different opening night. Now we've slowly gotten into the groove of sucking ass again. We were gashed on big plays last week and those are mental errors. The secondary needs to get that worked. Huff started the season hot but has cooled down so there aren't any real playmakers out there. Yea, we got Nnamdi, but he can't do it alone.

Then there's the front 7. Oh the front 7. Even with Sey & Ellis we still can't stop the run. 'Backers need to get into position. Kirk need to stop tweeting and start grinding or he outta here next season. Same with Howard (except i think he might have 1 more year). I don't even know who plays strong for us anymore, but it don't sound good.

I can't believe our special teams is sucking ass too. Punt & kick coverage have been very underwhelming thus far. I thought picking up Miller all over again would help us but he barely got to the 20 on kick returns. Well, he got cut again. Punt returns also have been shitty. Dunno of Higgins is truly healthy, but i do know we haven't done shit returning punts.

Then there's the coaching staff. I hate how we're forcing the passing game. We have (had) 3 backs but we rarely were stubborn with the run. Thought this was a running team. Now all it's doing is just exposing Russell. Decision not to play players when playing them can't hurt (Walker, Bush)? I don't like what i see. Now Cable might get suspended for his altercation with Hanson? I don't want to say it, but Cable looks like he was a muppet for Al to stick his hand up the poop shoot and make him do what he wants.

No flowers here. The perfume can't hide it. You play like shit, you get a shitty grade. F's all around.

2009 NFL Season: Week 1 Preview

After a mostly mild offseason for the Raiders, the last few weeks showed that a season could not start without controversy.

Staff infighting? Check. Head scratching trade? With a late arrival? Check and check.

And so the 2009 season officially begins with a bang for the Oakland Raiders. On prime time no less.

The last time the Raiders opened against the Chargers, it marked the beginning of the horrible 2nd campaign of Art Shell. Now, here we are, facing them again, looking down at the barrel of an 11 streak loss against the Chargers, the monkey of seasons with 5 or less wins since 2003 on our backs, and a pathetic 24-72 record over a span of 6 years.

It's bad, but the bottom might have been felt by Oakland too long.

They finished strong in '08, winning their last 2 games to close the season, and they seem primed to show the league just how much headway they've made.

The shaky preseason they've had shows they still have much to go, but the integral pieces are there.

QB JaMarcus Russell has the team in his hands, and he has shown significant growth from last season. The team will go as far as he takes them.

The running game is eager to get going with newly named, and rightfully starting RB Darren McFadden, who should explode this season. Plus Michael Bush & Justin Fargas for relief, the run game will be relied on heavily 'till Russell gets his feet under him.

Where the offense has major questions (besides Russell, of course) is along the line and the inexperience of the receiving core.

Do the new starters LT Mario Henderson and C Chris Morris and the rest of the OL have what it takes to go up against the fierce pass rush of the Chargers? If they can't hold up, it will surely be more of the same ass whoopin' we've been seeing and never been accustomed to.

The big disappointment out of the offseason was the injury to WR Chaz Schilens. Along with TE Zack Miller, the SDSU product looked to be the most comfortable receiver with Russell. Now, 2 rookies in Darrius Heyward-Bey and Louis Murphy will be starting against an experienced and opportunistic San Diego secondary.

The offense surely has it's hands full against what should be a top tier defense on opening night, but the Oakland defense also is looking at an unfavorable matchup.

The penultimate Raider killer this decade in LaDanian Tomlinson is still running for the Chargers and has always posed a threat against the Raiders. Even as time catches up with Tomlinson, the Raiders have not had an answer against the RB, so hopefully the new DC in John Marshall does what Rob Ryan could never do and bottle up LaDanian.

What's scary is that the Chargers don't lean on Tomlinson anymore. Their offense revolves around young QB Philip Rivers who is arguably a candidate for league MVP. He has a plethora of weapons in budding star WR Vincent Jackson, Chris Chambers, and not to forget Pro Bowler TE Antonio Gates. Shit, they even have RB Darren Sproles who is quick as hell. Other than Asomguha in the secondary, i see a mismatch all across the board. We will have to bring pressure, and it starts up front.

The pickup of DE Greg Ellis was a step in the right direction. Now, we pick up another stalwart up front in Richard Seymour and things might be interesting tonight. DTs Tommy Kelly & Gerrard Warren have been up and down with their play but maybe, just maybe, the addition of these 2 veterans will help them elevate their game. With a better front 4, LBs Kirk Morrision, Thomas Howard, and Ricky Brown should find ways to make plays. I hope.

All that hype, and i'm still iffy on this game. And i'm as close to a blind optimist with my team as Voltaire's Candide. The Chargers have had our number for quite some time, and that 3rd preseason dress rehearsal against New Orleans shook what minuscule confidence i was clinging on to.

But maybe this time it's different. Maybe we'll just win, baby.

Raiders Trade For Patriots DL Richard Seymour

Still sleepy, football the last thing on my mind, i quickly replied:

After waking up and finally getting on the computer, i'm able to assess the trade better.

i'm 50/50.

On one hand, we let a 2011 first round draft pick, a pick that could be potentially high, for a 29 going on 30 year old vet who is in the last year of his contract. Did i mention injury problems? Well, that too.

On the other side of the coin, we address our defense, specifically the DL where we've sucked ass for a long time. He's proven, so that's a plus. It looks like our DL is shaping up to be quite formidable (at least on paper) with Ellis and Warren and Kelly there. Hell, the addition of Seymour could make those guys better (i hope).

It still remains to be seen. I want to see us stop the run and stun the league on Monday night with a W against the rival dolts. If we can then improve over the season, maybe get a winning record this season... then yea, it's worth getting Seymour. Welcome to the Silver & Black!

Re: 53 Man Roster

So we got to 53 today and tho i know the roster will change more by the time the season plays out, there are a few things that stuck out in my mind:

1. Release of CB/KR Justin Miller

He kept us in games last season particularly for his ST skills. This is the biggest shock to me. Thought we had a good thing with him returning kicks and JLH returning punts, but what do i know, i'm just a fan. Hopefully the UDFA rook Nick Miller plays balls out or Branch can get us a couple of TDs returning kicks. Maybe even Rankin gets us good field position, i dunno. All i know is, Miller set us up with good field position plenty of times last season, i expect nothing less from whoever replaces him.

2. C Chris Morris starting

Wow. I'm sure every other person following the Raiders has the same response. I just hope that Cable made the right decision here.
